Yes, Whitney, and if vocal performances were more widely recognized in award circles, we would certainly have to pay homage to George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Bill Murray, and the rest of the first-rate vocal ensemble whose performances enlivened the claymation figures of Fantastic Mr. Fox.

Like performance capture worthy performances, I wish voice acting was more widely recognized in award circles. Like James Gandolfini in Where the Wild Things Are. I couldn't have been more enraptured by that performance.

Interesting post, Jerry. When I wasn't hypnotized by Avatar's visuals, I was indeed thinking "rotoscoping." As you indicate, there's a rich history of "performance capture" stretching back to early film regardless of what it's called, not excluding Tex Avery's red-hot cartoon mamas. Maybe cultural memory is fading so fast that before we know it Cameron will be acclaimed for "an extraordinary innovation in which characters seem to pop right off the screen in a true 'imitation of life'" - 3D!

If actors eventually get retired in favor of their digital counterparts (which I don't doubt will happen someday and not least for economic reasons), we'll have to start giving them Oscars. But by then we'll all be digital, holograms, or god knows what...
